To combat malnutrition, one of the main health problems affecting the most vulnerable groups of the Malagasy population, we have created the “Moringa Project”.
The objective of this pilot project is to contribute to the improvement of the quality and quantity of food available for mothers and children in the South of the country, the area most affected by severe drought and famine, through the creation of an innovative and sustainable agricultural supply chain aimed at the production of foods with high nutritional impact.
The Moringa Oleifera plant is widespread in tropical and equatorial areas: it is a fast-growing perennial tree, resistant to droughts, and not very susceptible to parasites and diseases. Its leaves can be used for human nutrition and, thanks to the beneficial nutrients they contain, are recognized as a powerful natural supplement rich in vitamins, proteins, and minerals.
The unique characteristics of Moringa, which has a low production cost and can be easily cultivated, processed, and distributed, allow us to develop entirely sustainable agricultural projects in the area, capable of generating income and well-being for rural communities and creating virtuous circles to promote social cohesion and job protection.
Once washed, dried, and pulverized, Moringa leaves can be stored for a long time and are easily added to any type of food or drink to increase its calorie and nutritional value.
Every month, we distribute the Moringa powder throughout the health centers that form part of our network, especially to pregnant women, new mothers, and children.
At the same time, the local community participates in awareness-raising activities, environmental and nutritional education, and in the promotion of sustainable agriculture. The involvement of the local population is an essential element to increase its degree of adhesion and participation in the project, and to ensure the socio-cultural sustainability of our activities.
